“An App for Better Trailhead Data Management”
Join us for our second Wilderness Webinar, beginning at 7:00 pm on Wednesday, September 1, 2021. Long-time AWA member and board member Ari Epstein will walk through the proof-of-concept Visitor Use Management Tool he has been developing, which could someday be implemented at popular trailheads to support adaptive management in the Adirondack Park.
Did you know that most trailhead register books, which collect all sorts of potentially useful visitor data, are collected by DEC but never tallied? The unique tool Ari has been developing arose out of our observation that wilderness visitors, resource managers, local communities, and advocacy organizations each need overlapping but distinct information about visitor activity in the park. As you may have read on our website (here and here), our tool starts with the humble trail register — the most ubiquitous data collection tool in the park — and seeks to adapt it to the smart phone era.
Ari, who works in public sector data management and innovation, will talk about what we have accomplished so far and discuss how this tool could be used in collaboration with organizations within and beyond the Adirondack Park. He will discuss how this tool fits into an array of efforts that seek to enhance the wild character of the Forest Preserve through better monitoring, visitor education, and rapid adaptation.
