Adirondack websites and social media are abuzz with news of a new pilot permit program that the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) and Adirondack Mountain Reserve (AMR) have agreed to. Some of the stakeholder organizations represented in the High Peaks Advisory Group (HPAG) have endorsed this pilot. AWA has not.
Ari, who works in public sector data management and innovation, will talk about what we have accomplished so far and discuss how this tool could be used in collaboration with organizations within and beyond the Adirondack Park. He will discuss how this tool fits into an array of efforts that seek to enhance the wild character of the Forest Preserve through better monitoring, visitor education, and rapid adaptation.
The concept was simple: Provide a digital alternative to the ubiquitous trailhead register books many visitors fill out (and all visitors should fill out) on their way in and out of the backcountry.
