Many of us who have explored the wilderness areas of the 6-million-acre Adirondack Park know that the ability to experience remoteness is a rare privilege in New York State. These places need to be recognized and protected!

AWA believes that whenever possible, unambiguous data about a problem helps those working to solve it.

That is why we have been exploring ways, with the help of Rochester Institute of Technology students, to get data about trailhead usage into the hands of resource managers in a low-cost, timely manner.

Roads are a critical topic for AWA: no issue in the Adirondack Park more affects our core mission to preserve and increase remoteness and solitude. In an ever more developed world, this is an issue of global importance, as few places on Earth are more than three miles from a road.

AWA would like to see Debar preserved as a wild destination—no lodge, no pavilions, no septic systems. Just the sighing wind through the pine trees as sunlight strikes the rugged mountainsides. This place is already easily accessible and requires no artificial enhancements.
