Our Mission

We're here because we care deeply about the Adirondack wilderness and the need to protect it.

Our Policies to Protect Wilderness

As a wilderness advocacy organization, our mission is to speak for and protect the wilderness quality of the Adirondack Forest Preserve. Wherever wilderness conditions exist — that is, wherever there are large sections of public land existing in a motorless state, regardless of whether they are officially protected as “wilderness” by state agencies — Adirondack Wilderness Advocates (AWA) will work to see those places preserved for future generations.

To that end, we have adopted a set of guidelines to guide our actions. AWA will apply these policies when weighing our future advocacy actions, or when responding to proposals impacting the management of the Forest Preserve. This will provide consistency to our positions, and guard against “mission creep” over time.
